Direct instruction is the use of straightforward, explicit teaching techniques, usually to teach a specific skill. It is a teacher-directed method, meaning that the teacher stands in front of a classroom and presents the information.

Inquiry-based learning is a form of active learning that starts by posing questions, problems or scenarios—rather than simply presenting established facts or portraying a smooth path to knowledge.


They are both needed in an effective classroom!

  1. I agree both direct and inquiry instruction are needed and effective in the classroom. Some students learn better through direct instruction. Others learn best with hands on experience in inquiry instruction.
